I agree to some extent...I thought that it put a lot of people in an awkward situation. The thing that struck me the most was when they were listing people who were planning on wearing 42 (before entire teams said they were doing it) and the said Carlos Lee for the Astros. I was kinda intrigued so I checked and the Astros don't actually have a black player on the roster...it was like Lee was the closest thing they had or something. In the end all the Astros wore 42 (probably because of the situation they were in).

At some point it became kind of a gimick, but I think that falls more on the media, which once again crammed the celebration down our throats. This is a celebration that should have been for the players and the fans at the ballparks. I just think plastering it all over the TV and radio talk shows and pregame shows ruins the event a little. Just me though

I wrote a more extensive reply here. I didn't like how they handled it at all. Griffey doing it would have been kind of cool. Allowing anyone who wanted to do it made it a mockery and a bit of a sham. The number 42 became bigger than the man and the story itself.
