Have you guys noticed that Sammy Sosa is putting up some decent numbers for the Rangers this spring?
In my baseball prediction, I had him being a 2007 version of Frank Thomas. You know, a one time superstar that had played limitedly lately with a chip on his shoulder. Add in the fact that Sosa will be playing at the Homer Park in Arlington, and we have what looks to be the comeback player of the year.
Here's Sammy's stats through 9 spring training games:
S Sosa .464 BA/6 Runs/2 Doubles/1 Triple/2 HRs/6 RBI
I know spring training stats are worthless, but still those are some decent numbers. Now the Rangers just need to worry about him out in the field.
Yikes.
What do you think? Who do you have as AL comeback player of the year?
It's just spring training. Pretty impressive numbers, but once again, it's just the spring. I predict that he will regain his strike out swing he has perfected over the years and end the year with something like .220/8/35.
For comeback player of the year, I like Eric Gagne to return to his dominant form with the Rangers.

I never liked Sammy Sosa, but this I'm pulling for him. Partly just because everyone is against him and partly because of that new sweet hair hes got. You guys see that, where its like all slicked back.

Sosa used to be my favorite player, but ever since he got off the roids, I don't think he has much left in the tank. Besides, with hair like that, you can't expect him to hit more than 10 dingers this year, provided he even makes the team.
haha second round, i traded pujols for sosa straight up

While Sosa's stats are impressive, there are many factors to take into consideration. Spring training numbers are for the most part worthless as you stated, but there are also the questions of Sosa staying healthy, or if his age will catch up with him during the season. Camden is not really a hitter's park and The Ballpark in Arlington is so maybe Sosa will have some success in his refreshed season, but I do not think by any means he will be comeback player of the year or that he will be consistent. He proved with the Orioles that he cannot just start at DH, so maybe if he does play the field sometime he will put up decent numbers such as Rondell White. In my opinion, he is too old, his eye at the plate is not where it once was, but I guess the baseball season is very long and there are many surprises that occur. Who knows Sosa might hit around .300, 20 bombs, and 75-80 RBI's if he plays everyday.

health is the question. when you could hit for power like sosa you will still have a lot of power at his age (look at Frank Thomas). But Sosa will have to stay healthy and probably get used to being a DH because playing the field everyday will be a struggle for that body.

Sosa started in right field yesterday, that was kind of surprising to me. I thought he would DH. His 0-3 performance at the plate was not too surpring to me though. I know, it's just one game.
