Draft Order

Let's hear who some of your big names are, and more importantly where you plan to take them.

I'm curious to see where Johan is going to go. I've seen him go as high as 2nd in some mock drafts but I think if you had a big Twins fan with the number one pick......

To me, hitting is at such a premium unless you are in a custom league where pitchers are overvalued. Myself, I won't be caught dead taking a pitcher until the 3rd round at the highest, and that would only be if someone started a run on the top guys and I felt like I couldn't miss out on the top tier starters

I'm going to throw this guy out there: Carl Crawford. In every expert draft I see he goes in the first round or the 1/2nd pick in the 2nd round. If you look on "amatuer" drafts though his average position is about 25 which would put him anywhere from late 2nd, mid third depending on the number of teams. I would absolutely love to take this guy, but do I use my first round pick on him or hope he lasts until I come around in the third?

You can't find guys that are going to steal 40+ bases in the 6,7,8th rounds but you can find pitchers that will get you stats that can make taking Johan early look stupid.

Any thoughts?

sidenote: people are taking Dunn before Crawford, those better be leagues that reward homeruns extra and don't penalize for average or factor SB otherwise that is just stupid

Dunn is awesome for slugging, OBP and home runs so I could see taking him ahead of Crawford, maybe.

I'm wondering where people are ranking Jason Bay?  I took him at 22, but I like him as a player so I'm thinking I may have reached a little.  He's always stole some bases and is a very well-rounded hitter.

jason bay will be a lot better this year with adam larouche protecting him in the line-up. his stock naturally rised over the last off-season. as for johan, yea i would aggree that points wise, hitters are just more important. however, with a guy with strike out potential like johan santana, he really elevates himself because he can put up numbers other pitchers cant, kinda like randy johnson in his prime. then if youre sitting in the second round and are afraid that he wont fall another 20 slots till youre up again, then i can see taking him. its a risk though, he has had a few little injury problems over the last two years too.

a guy like carl crawford or a big time base stealer is valuable and you need at least one guy like that on your team. yea he gets you points for every stolen base, but after he swipes second he's in scoring position and the heart of your line up is due up, so then he scores more runs.

I just don't know how I feel about Bay. It could be that I just hate the Pirates but I just think he is overrated. Obviously if he is sitting there at the end of the third round and outfielders are flying off the board I would take him but me personally I would take a lot of other guys that are similar to him before I would take Bay...

...not really based on any one reason just more of a gut feeling

Jason Bay is a great hitter, a good fantasy guy, but its true he may be a little over-valued. A guy like Maglio Ordonez would be available at about the same time and you would be left with a choice of Bay or Ordonez, I would definetly take Ordonez becuause of the production in that line up, but remember, Bay's numbers are bound to go up with the addition of Adam LaRouche.

I know we talked about Johan before, but I gotta say, I'm suprised to see him rated as the thrid overall player on the board. Regardless of how good you are, it does seem like a risk to take a guy that is not an everyday player and one bad outing can mean he essentially goes ten days producing nothing. Sure, I guess I'm on board in the end of the first round, but 3rd!!!!! Man, I just don't know.

I agree entirely, and I think your argument is probably the most effective to counter people who say he is the most dominate pitcher in the game.

Your argument increase ten-fold if you are considering H2H leagues in which if he has a bad outing you probably will lose simply because you used such a high pick on a pitcher. If he drops to me at 10...11...12 at which I know I'm probably going to be able to get the hitter I want with my next pick I can see taking him in the first round, but seriously not only do hitters effect more areas (all 5 hitting categories, plus possibly wins if you have hitters and pitchers for the same team, compared to pitchers who only effect 4 max) but they play every day!
