Salary Cap
Permalink

I think that baseball should have a salary cap.  Their current luxury tax system is a joke.  Other sports have salary caps that make the playing field a little more even.  I'm not saying that money makes a team successful, but it sure does help, especially when there is no limit to the amount you can spend.  I'm curious what everyone else thinks about this.

I think a salary cap would be good too and in some ways level the playiing field. although the players union will never approve and it will never happen.

As a Yankee guy i dont mind teams spending money. As a baseball guy, sure I'd like to see a salary cap but I'm agreed it will never happen. Part of me even wants to see a cap as a Yankee fan because I know their player development skills are a lot greater than anyone gives credit for and if they couldnt spend as much you would really see that.

I don't think the salary cap would really level the playing field any more than it already is. Just look at last year's AL playoff teams:

1) Detriot Tigers - mid-sized payroll
2) Oakland Athletics - small
3) Twins - small
4) Yanks - Large

To me, that is a good mix of teams.

Look at the disperity in the NBA (they have the strictest salary cap):

West Playoff teams

1) Mavericks
2) Suns
3) Spurs
4) Rockets
5) Lakers

Those teams are there every year (except when injuries hold them back). It appears that the salary cap doesn't really lead to a leveling of the playing field.

In addition, the number of trades done between teams in the NBA is low compared to the number done in baseball (just look at the past NBA trade deadline). This isn't entirely because of the salary cap, but it does play a role (i.e. you can't trade Jason Kidd for prospects because the salaries don't match up). I, personally, like to see teams make trades to better position themselves for either the future or for a playoff run.

The salary cap may not be the best thing for the MLB because of the extensive farm system. As the MAN eluded to, if there was a salary cap, then salaries would have to match up in order to make trades. Say that a team out of the race and wanting to rebuild has one marquee player with a big salary. That player becomes essentially untradable with a salary cap because what the team wants in return are prospects. Well in order to have the trade work, the team would have to additionally take on players with large contracts in order to balance out the salary cap. This means that those players would probably be older and overpaid, exactly the kind of thign a rebuilding does not want.
